Is Product Hunt worth it, or is there an alternative?

Hype Star vs Product Hunt

Product Hunt is worth it if you have a live product and can be present for one launch day: it is free, and launches compete on a daily homepage leaderboard that its team curates. Hype Star does a different job, giving a reviewed project a free public profile with no expiry, so for most makers the answer is to use both rather than pick one.

A launch day versus a listing that stays

Product Hunt is built around a single day. Its leaderboard changes throughout the day, and Product Hunt suggests launching at 12:01 am Pacific Time if you are planning ahead. Launches the team does not feature still appear in the All feed and can still get comments and upvotes.

Hype Star has no launch day. A project is reviewed once, and an accepted profile stays public without an expiry unless it is paused, removed, or no longer meets the directory rules. The same catalog is open to people browsing categories and to agents using it through JSON, MCP, or the Hype Star skill.

Who each one fits

  • Product Hunt fits a live digital product whose makers can spend launch day answering comments, and who want feedback, early users, and reviews.
  • Product Hunt fits makers who want a shot at Product of the Day and the attention that comes with it.
  • Hype Star fits a project that should stay findable after launch week, at no cost, without needing an account.
  • Hype Star fits services, which Product Hunt says it does not feature, as long as they have a public site in English.
  • Hype Star fits makers who are not ready for a launch day yet but already have a public site.

Why using both makes sense

The two do not compete for the same moment. Submit to Hype Star as soon as your project has a public English site and you have added the badge; the profile does not depend on timing. Launch on Product Hunt when the product is live and you can be there for the day.

When to pick Product Hunt instead

If you only have time for one thing this week and your product is live, Product Hunt is the better use of that time: a launch brings comments and conversation that a directory profile does not.

If you cannot add a Hype Star badge to your site, a new free Hype Star listing is not possible, while Product Hunt has no such requirement.

If your project is not in English, Hype Star will not accept it.

Questions

Is Product Hunt free?
Yes. Product Hunt says it is free for everyone and that you can reach Product of the Day without spending anything. Its advertising is separate from the leaderboard and rankings.
Can I list my product on both Product Hunt and Hype Star?
Yes. They do different jobs: Product Hunt is a launch event, and Hype Star is a reviewed directory profile with no expiry.
Does Product Hunt give a dofollow backlink?
On the product pages checked on 20 October 2026, the Visit website link was rel="noreferrer noopener ugc". Hype Star's link is rel="noopener ugc nofollow". Google says links with these attributes will generally not be followed, so value both for visitors more than for link equity.
What happens if my Product Hunt launch is not featured?
Product Hunt says unfeatured launches still appear in the All feed and can still get comments and upvotes. You can resubmit after 6 months, but featuring stays at the team's discretion.
